If you are a BIM experts, probably you have read the BIM Handbook as it is recognised a key text on BIM. It was initiated by Charles Eastman, considered the father of BIM. The pace of change in BIM technologies and processes is accelerating and the need for trusted, updated guidance has never been greater. Therefore, I am thrilled to announce the release of the BIM Handbook, 4th Edition.
What is new?
All chapters have been revised including:
• Global standards and process expansions
• Fresh case studies across project types and sectors
• Insights on AI tools and generative design • Introductions to digital twin construction (DTC) and digital twins for FM
I particularly like two new case studies: one on a client that implemented BIM on a low budget for an hospital in Denmark, demonstrating that cost cannot be a barrier. The second case study deals with innovative workflows by Focchi showing how BIM is used to manufacture façade panels and install them onsite in an effective way.
Each chapter focuses on different professional: from clients, operators and policy makers, designers and engineers, contractors, subcontractors and fabricators and software developers, to students and educators. The last chapter presents future trends to help students and professionals in their development and remain competitive in a fast-changing scenario.
The authors
For the first time two women are authors of the BIM Handbook: Luciana Burdi and me. In the past Kathleen Liston was involved in the 1st and 2nd edition, the 3rd ed had all male authors. It has been an honour to work on such an important text with relevant experts. All authors provided a global insight on the topic: Rafael Sacks (Middle East), Ghang Lee (Asia), Luciana Burdi (America) and me (Europe).
When I was asked to become a co-author I was pregnant and I was not sure to be able to commit to such a demanding project. But I am glad I accepted the invitation and I contributed to the success of this text. This is just a reminder to all women, not to limit yourself when things are changing in your life, if you feel it is the right thing to do. You can do it!
Why to read it?
We are more and more used to short training material (e.g. short posts, videos, podcast) and we might find challenging to read a book, I know the feeling. However, reading a book is still one of the best ways to improve your knowledge in a comprehensive way, force you to a “deep work” and improve your productivity. The text is divided in chapters so you can focusing on key areas.
This new edition is an invitation to learn, invest in your education and continue development, remain competitive and shape the future of our sector!
