In a world where sustainability targets are being questioned and public funding for green initiatives is increasingly under pressure, it is tempting to think of sustainability as something that can be paused, postponed, or priced out. But from my perspective, this is exactly the moment where it becomes non-negotiable.
If governments are stepping back, then the private sector, and especially those of us shaping the built environment, must step forward. And while the challenge feels urgent, I believe the answer is simple: we need to bridge the gap between ambition and action. That is exactly what BIM can do.
Why sustainability matters… and why it can’t wait
Sustainability is not just about reducing carbon emissions or earning certifications. It means creating buildings that last, that can adapt over time, and that support the people who use and maintain them. It also means building resilience, something that is becoming more important for both our projects and our businesses.
When we embed sustainability into the design process from the beginning, it becomes more than a goal. It leads to lower operational costs, easier maintenance, and healthier environments. This is where BIM plays an important role. It helps us manage the complexity of sustainable planning. It turns intentions into clear steps, supported by reliable data and better collaboration.
Simplicity as a design ethic
I love speaking about simplicity. Not as a trend, but as a design ethic rooted in my own journey.
Growing up in Buenos Aires, I saw architecture that worked with constraints, materials reused, details simplified, beauty created from clarity rather than excess. Later, while studying in Spain and practicing in Germany, I was able to pair that sense of simplicity with precision, structure, and long-term thinking.
Today, leading an architecture studio in Stuttgart, I merge these approaches and have come to see that sustainability and simplicity go together. When used well, BIM makes both possible and more efficient.
To me, sustainability has always been about more than checklists and performance metrics, it is about how we choose to build, and what kind of future we want to shape. I am driven by the belief that simplicity is powerful, not because it is easier, but because it leads to better decisions, stronger collaboration, and spaces that truly serve people.
That belief comes from experience across cultures, systems, and projects. I have seen how simplicity in materials and planning often leads to simplicity in execution. That is why I was drawn to BIM early on. With the right approach, BIM does not add complexity, it removes it. It gives us clarity. It brings sustainability out of theory and into the heart of the design process. And that, for me, is the key: turning values into action through tools that support the people using them.
Simplicity and impact
Too often, sustainability feels abstract, a set of goals written into a report but not translated into design. BIM changes that. It brings data into focus and lets us design with foresight instead of guesswork.
When I say “BIM makes sustainability simple,” I mean:
- You can model building orientation and daylight potential in minutes.
- You can calculate material quantities and environmental impact early on.
- You can collaborate transparently with MEP, structural, and sustainability experts from day one.
- You can track goals. For example, energy reduction, material reuse, or flexibility for future use , all within a central model.
This is not about complexity. It is about making the right decisions visible from the outset. For example, in working with clients who are considering sustainable building materials, we often use BIM to quickly compare the environmental impacts of various options, like the difference in carbon footprint between concrete and timber structures, or the potential for optimizing natural light in a design. The data is immediately accessible, and that makes it easier for clients to make informed, sustainable decisions.
This is where BIM’s power truly lies: it brings transparency to the decision-making process. Instead of guessing or relying on generalized assumptions, teams can access real-time data that helps them make choices with confidence, whether it is reducing material waste, improving energy efficiency, or choosing sustainable alternatives. That is what leads to better projects and better outcomes.
Simple steps
If you are an architect or planner who is new to this, here is what I would say: start small, but start intentionally.
1. Set one clear sustainability goal per project, like tracking daylight or reducing concrete use. Let the model support it.
2. Choose tools you already have access to. Most BIM platforms now offer sustainability plugins or metrics. You do not need to reinvent your workflow.
3. Bring others into the conversation early. BIM supports collaboration. Use that to your advantage.
4. Design for flexibility. Buildings that adapt are the most sustainable ones.
When we talk about sustainability, we are also talking about inclusion because sustainability touches not just our material resources, but also our people. How we plan, design, and build directly shapes how people live, connect, and belong. That is why social sustainability must be part of the conversation, especially as we embrace digital tools like BIM.
These are not just “soft” insights. Questions like Does this serve the people who will use it? or Is this intuitive and adaptable? are strategic. BIM can help answer these and other questions by enabling better collaboration and shared data and understanding across the project team. That is where real sustainability begins: when we use digital tools to build connections that lead to better decisions in the design process.
This is our moment to lead
It is easy to feel like we are waiting for better policies, for more funding, or for the perfect tools. But as professionals who work with data, materials, and systems every day, we already have what we need to lead.
Sustainability does not need to be a massive leap. It just needs to be a clear step backed by data, shaped by intention, and supported by collaboration.
BIM can make that step easier.
And if we use it not only to coordinate but to connect ideas, disciplines, and people, then we can move from complexity to simplicity, from ambition to action, from talk to impact.
Start simple. Move forward. A little each day is enough, and often, more powerful than we think.
